Why I Purchased a Dental Practice

Dr. Allison Bartley shares the personal story behind buying South Barrington Dental Care — and her commitment to honest, modern, patient-centered dentistry that never puts production goals ahead of what's truly best for you.

A personal commitment to honest, modern and patient-centered dentistry

Becoming the owner of a dental practice was never simply about owning a business. For me, it was about creating a place where I could practice dentistry according to the principles that brought me into the profession in the first place: honesty, compassion, clinical excellence and doing what is truly best for each patient.

Before purchasing South Barrington Dental Care, I had the opportunity to work with several experienced dentists. I learned a great deal from them, and those experiences helped shape the kind of dentist — and practice owner — I wanted to become.

They also showed me how quickly dentistry is changing.

Modern Dentistry Can Make a Remarkable Difference

Dental technology has advanced tremendously. Treatments that once required multiple appointments, temporary restorations, uncomfortable impressions or lengthy recovery times can now often be completed more comfortably, accurately and efficiently.

Working in established practices helped me understand how important it is for a dentist to continually study and adopt the latest proven technology. Experience is extremely valuable, but experience must be combined with a willingness to keep learning.

Modern dental technology is not about having impressive equipment simply for the sake of having it. It should provide meaningful benefits for patients.

The right technology can:

  • Identify potential problems earlier
  • Improve diagnostic accuracy
  • Make treatment more comfortable
  • Reduce the number of appointments required
  • Preserve more natural tooth structure
  • Produce more predictable results
  • Save patients time and money over the long term

At South Barrington Dental Care, we have made technology an important part of the patient experience. Our dental images are reviewed with the assistance of Pearl AI, which provides an additional layer of analysis when evaluating X-rays. We use CEREC technology to create many permanent crowns in a single visit, eliminating the need for a temporary crown and a return appointment.

We have also introduced Curodont, an innovative treatment designed to help stop and reverse certain early-stage cavities before traditional drilling and filling become necessary. Our patients can also benefit from CandidPro clear aligner treatment and professional Zoom Whitening.

“Every technology we introduce must meet one standard: Will this genuinely improve the care we provide?”

I Wanted the Freedom to Practice Conservatively

Another important reason I purchased my own practice was that I wanted the freedom to make treatment recommendations based solely on what I believed each patient truly needed.

During my time working for other dentists, there were occasions when I felt uncomfortable with the timing or extent of treatment being recommended. Dentistry is not always completely black and white. Two dentists may evaluate the same situation and have different opinions about when treatment should be performed.

However, I never wanted to feel pressured to recommend a procedure simply because it was more profitable or because a production goal needed to be reached.

If I do not believe a treatment is necessary, I will not recommend it. If a condition can be watched safely, I will explain that option. If there is a conservative treatment that may prevent the need for a more extensive procedure, I want my patients to know about it.

And when treatment is necessary, I will explain what I see, why I am recommending it, what alternatives may exist and what could happen if treatment is delayed.

Patients deserve to be active participants in decisions about their health. My responsibility is to provide clear information and honest professional guidance — not to pressure anyone into treatment.

Creating the Kind of Practice I Would Want for My Own Family

Owning South Barrington Dental Care gives me the opportunity to build the kind of dental practice I would want for my own parents, siblings, husband and closest friends.

  • That means taking time to listen.
  • It means treating emergencies promptly and helping patients get out of pain.
  • It means using technology when it provides a genuine advantage, while never allowing technology to replace thoughtful clinical judgment.
  • It means respecting patients' time, finances, concerns and individual priorities.

Most importantly, it means building relationships based on trust.

I understand that many people arrive at the dentist feeling anxious or uncertain. Some have had uncomfortable experiences in the past. Others may be worried about the cost of care or embarrassed because it has been a long time since their last visit.

There is no judgment here. Our role is to meet you where you are and help you move forward.

A Practice Built for the Future

Purchasing South Barrington Dental Care has allowed me to combine the best parts of traditional, relationship-based dentistry with the advantages of modern technology.

I am proud of what our team is building, but I am even more excited about what lies ahead. Dentistry will continue to evolve, and I am committed to continuing my education, carefully evaluating new developments and bringing our patients treatments that are proven to be safe, effective and worthwhile.

To every patient who has already trusted me with their care: thank you. That trust is something I never take for granted.

To those I have not yet had the opportunity to meet: I look forward to welcoming you, listening to your concerns and showing you what thoughtful, honest, modern dentistry can feel like.
