How We Use AI to Help Read Dental X-Rays

AI Is a Second Set of Eyes - Not a Replacement for Your Dentist

At South Barrington Dental Care, we believe great dentistry combines a careful clinical eye with modern technology. That is why we use artificial intelligence, or AI, as an additional tool when reviewing dental Xrays during your visit.

If you have recently seen colored outlines, markings, or highlighted areas appear on your X-rays while we review them together, you may have already seen our dental AI technology in action.

Your dentist still makes the diagnosis and treatment recommendation. We look at the complete picture, including:

• Your dental X-rays
• Your clinical examination
• Your symptoms and concerns
• Previous X-rays and whether an area has changed over time
• Your dental and medical history
• Existing fillings, crowns, and other dental work
• Your individual risk for cavities and gum disease

The AI simply analyzes the image and highlights areas that may deserve a closer look.

What Can Dental AI Show Us?

Dental X-rays contain a tremendous amount of information. AI software can analyze the same images our clinical team is already reviewing and may highlight areas associated with concerns such as:

• Tooth decay or cavities
• Changes around existing fillings or crowns
• Bone levels around the teeth
• Areas that may be associated with periodontal (gum) disease
• Other changes that deserve closer clinical evaluation

We then compare what the technology identifies with what we see on the original X-ray and during your examination. AI provides another piece of information - it does not replace clinical judgment.

Helping Us Catch Small Changes Earlier

One of the biggest advantages of modern dental technology is the opportunity to identify potential problems while they are still small. Some changes on an X-ray can be subtle, especially early on. Our goal is not to find more treatment. Our goal is to find problems at the right time.

When a concern is identified earlier, treatment may sometimes be simpler and more conservative than if the condition progresses. And when an area does not need treatment yet, we can document it, compare it with prior images, and monitor it over time.

Making Your X-Rays Easier to Understand

This is one of our favorite reasons to use AI.

Dental X-rays can look like a sea of black, white, and gray when you do not look at them every day. We never want you to feel as though we are simply pointing at an image and asking you to take our word for what we see.

Instead, we want to show you. During your visit, we can review your X-rays together on the screen. AI can visually highlight certain areas, making it easier for us to explain:

• What we see
• Why we are looking at it
• Whether it has changed
• What, if anything, we recommend doing about it

“AI provides information. Your dentist provides the diagnosis.”

Does an AI Highlight Mean I Have a Cavity?

No. If the AI highlights an area on your X-ray, that does not automatically mean there is a cavity, gum disease, or another dental problem. It also does not automatically mean treatment is necessary.

Think of it more like the AI saying: “Doctor, take another look here.”

From there, Dr. Bartley evaluates the area using the X-ray, your examination, your dental history, and her clinical judgment. Sometimes treatment is appropriate. Sometimes we take a closer look. And sometimes the best decision is simply to monitor the area over time.

Can AI See Something a Dentist Might Miss? 

Dental AI is designed to help bring subtle areas to the clinician's attention. That can be especially useful when an area is difficult to see or deserves comparison with prior X-rays. 

AI is not perfect, which is exactly why we use it as an assistive tool rather than a replacement for the dentist. We believe the strongest approach is dentist plus AI: clinical experience and judgment supported by modern technology. 

Does Using AI Mean I Need More X-Rays? 

No. The AI analyzes the dental X-rays we have already taken as part of your care. We do not take additional X-rays simply so that AI can review them.

What the Research Shows 

A large VideaHealth analysis reviewed 470,831 patients across 100 dental practices and described dental AI as a tool that can support clinicians in identifying disease earlier, provide a second opinion chairside, and improve patient engagement and clinical consistency. The report also described clinicians using AI to help confirm subtle areas of possible decay and to make X-ray findings easier to explain to patients.
